With the assistance of Wildlands Conservation Trust, the Department of Agriculture, GTZ (German Development Agency), the Ingonyama Trust Board and His Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill kaBhekhuzulu, Thanda returned the land to wilderness and reintroduced all of its naturally occurring game. This project served as a great opportunity to embrace the principles of community-based natural resource management.
In close cooperation with provincial government, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Ingonyama Trust Board and the Wildlands Conservation Trust, Thanda has now achieved a proclamation of the 14 000 ha property – comprising Thanda Safari and the Mduna Royal Reserve - as a protected game reserve for biodiversity and eco-tourism management.
Thanda will manage the wildlife, security, anti-poaching and operational reserve requirements inherent in its 90-year lease, in return for exclusive traversing rights for guests. The Zulu King’s personal game reserve, Ipiva, is located within Mduna Royal Reserve. This reserve of some 1 150 hectares is managed by Thanda on His Majesty’s behalf.
