ULWAZI RESEARCH PROGRAMME

Ulwazi means place of learning in isiZulu and this is the ethos of the Ulwazi Research Programme on Thanda Safari. Thanda Safari’s vision from the outset has been to advance conservation on the property by restoring the balance between the wildlife populations, natural habitats and ecological processes. To achieve this, our experienced wildlife and ecology team partners with leading conservation organisations, universities and researchers worldwide.

We invite you to join the Ulwazi Research Programme as a Volunteer Research Assistant or Research Intern. Whether you are an undergraduate or postgraduate student wanting to pursue research and/or gain work experience in the wildlife and conservation field, or if you are on a gap year or holidaying in Africa and wanting to contribute to conservation, we have a programme that is suitable for you.

As a Volunteer Research Assistant you participate in ongoing and novel research projects and in the day-to-day management of the reserve, including Big Five monitoring, habitat management, data collection and analysis. You will also have the opportunity to engage in community support activities with the neighbouring Zulu communities.

The work is varied, the days are full and interesting and the research skills and the knowledge that you gain at Ulwazi will serve your life and career. If you are interested in photography, you will have the opportunity to learn from our resident photography expert.

We offer a 2-week, 4-week, 8-week and 12-week programme to suit your requirements. Safari-style accommodation is provided in thatched chalets at our Intibane Research & Training Centre. For more information and rates, please visit the Ulwazi website.
