The Thanda Lions Football Team is registered in the amateur league of South Africa’s Football Association. It began 10 years ago as the Thanda staff team, but is now predominantly composed of unemployed youth (many from Star for Life schools) from the uMkhanyakude District, with Thanda staff making up only a minority.
It is coached and managed by Anna Nyman, a football coach from Sweden (who also teaches football to girls in the Star for Life network), while Thanda sponsors accommodation, food and transport.
The club not only gives the players the technical, tactical and physical development they need, but also emphasises personal development and education so that the players can excel as professionals, in soccer and in the workplace.
The Lions play all over Zululand and finish each year near the top of the league. In fact, the calibre of players is historically so high that many (four at present) go on to play for Thanda Royal Zulu Football Club, registered in the Premier Soccer League.
