South Africa’s highly acclaimed luxury game lodge, Thanda Private Game Reserve has been nominated in the 2006 World Travel Awards in South Africa’s Leading Safari category. The awards are considered to be the travel industry’s equivalent of the Oscar’s, according to Wall Street Journal. The winners will be selected by means of a voting campaign that is open to over 160 000 travel agents and tourism professionals in over 200 countries world-wide. Votes can be submitted on-line at www.worldtravelawards.com from 16 April 2006, and winners will be announced on 20 September at the awards ceremony in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos.


Criteria required to enter the awards included making a contribution towards excellence in tourism. The philosophy of ‘For the love of nature, wildlife and dear ones’ is intrinsic to Thanda’s social investment and commitment. To date, Thanda has created more than 222 jobs that feed close on 1 500 people, and has committed to invest approximately R100-million towards long-term social upliftment and community development through initiatives such as JAC (JOBS, AIDS & CONSERVATION) and the Star School Concept.


Thanda is currently the only private game reserve in the world to be a member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World. Luxurious facilities include a main lodge and a tented camp, and an award-winning wellness centre. It is the first privately owned game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal to introduce a breeding pack of wild dog, complementing the Big Five experience. An integral part of the Thanda experience is Vula Zulu which showcases Zulu history and culture.
