Inauguration of Annabelle Bond (OBE) as First Honorary Princess NOMOYA OF THE SACRED COUNCIL OF INGXOTHA resurrected by the Thanda Foundation.
His Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill kaBhekuZulu, ruler of the magnificent lands of KwaZulu, has recognised the journeys of greatness and contributions of the spirit made by Annabelle Bond (OBE). Formalizing her appointment as First Honorary Princess Nomoya Of the Sacred Council of Ingxotha at a ceremony held at Villa iZulu at Thanda Private Game Reserve today, the King expressed his joy at the re-establishment of this sacred tradition.
The Royal Council of InGxotha, resurrected by the Thanda Foundation, represents the sanctity and honour of the ancient Zulu ceremony in which brave warriors were celebrated for their gifts to community, society and humanity at large, and for their commitment to the defence and preservation of the rights and well-being of their people.
Kindly find included herewith the formal speech as presented by His Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill KaBhekuzulu at 10h15AM on Wednesday November 22, 2006 at Villa iZulu, Thanda Private Game Reserve, Natal, South Africa.
A SPEECH BY HIS MAJESTY KING ZWELITHINI GOODWILL KABHEKUZULU KAMAPHUMZANA KADINUZULU AT THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF ANNABELLE BOND (OBE) INTO THE ROYAL COUNCIL OF INGXOTHA AT THE VILLA IZULU THANDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE FOR THE THANDA FOUNDATION
ON 22 MARCH 2006
Director of the Programme and Chairman of the Thanda Foundation, Mr. Pierre Delvaux, Princess Nandi Zulu, my daughter and ambassador of the Thanda Foundation, Annabelle Bond (OBE), who will be inaugurated as Princess in the Royal Council of Ingxotha, Lucy Tang, Annabelle Bond’s friend, distinguished guests, educators and learners, ladies and gentlemen, and members of the media. Today I have the most gratifying task to perform three measure functions. The first one is to announce how appreciative the Zulu nation is to you all for attending this function. The second one is to congratulate Annabelle Bond (OBE) on her numerous and outstanding achievements. The third one is to honour her with Ingxotha, which is the most distinguished award the Zulus ever gave to those who had demonstrated unprecedented bravery or service to the King and nation.
My association with the Thanda Foundation
My association with Thanda and the Thanda Foundation, dates back a few years ago. It has been strengthened by their dedication to address the pandemic of HIV and Aids through the Star School Project that plagues my nation and the whole of Africa, if not the world. On behalf of the Zulu nation, led by a series of illustrious kings like Bhekuzulu my father, born of Maphumzana, of Dinuzulu, of Cetshwayo, of Mpande King Shaka’s brother, of Senzangakhona, of Jama. King Shaka who died in 1828 left a legacy of a nation guided by and nurtured in solid principles of ubuntu. It is therefore not an onerous task for us to acknowledge the deeds of those people who commit themselves to the alleviation of all circumstances that attack the normal living of men and women, that undermine their aspirations in life, and that diminish their dignity as human beings. The vision of the leadership of the Thanda Foundation is a beacon of hope to us.
Annabelle Bond (OBE)
It is through the Thanda Foundation that we have become aware of Annabelle Bond (OBE), a rare person with an indomitable spirit. The fact that she is of British origin, invokes in us those historic moments at Isandlwana, Rorkes Drift and Ulundi, where the unprecedented bravery of the two powers was tested. It is a great day for us to welcome Annabelle to the Zulu Kingdom. She symbolizes the very essence of success and both young and adult citizens of my country are going to be motivated enormously by her record of achievements. Acknowledging your inborn drive to conquer and internalize the wonders of mountains as it were, you tell us that you owe that first glimpse into what men and women can do in mountain climbing, to your grand mother, Christine, who was one of the first Western women to have trekked through the high altitudes and threatening conditions of the mountainous Nepal. Today Ladies and Gentlemen, in front of us sits Annabelle Bond who in twelve months, climbed the seven summits of the World, braved it to the North Pole and undertook a burdensome ride on horseback across Ecuador, to mention but a few of her achievements. This year Annabelle Bond was included in the birthday honour of Queen Elizabeth, for her contribution to mountaineering and to the Eve Appeal, which specialized in the prevention of ovarian cancer. Annabelle Bond’s unrelenting spirit enabled her to raise R22 million for the cause. All of her endeavours earned her the award of OBE by Queen Elizabeth.
Ingxotha
Zulus had also a way of recognizing the outstanding achievements and services by members of the nation. Ingxotha, for instance, was initiated by Kings even decades before the famous King Shaka. It is made of iron which was found in some king of stone and ore in certain parts of the country. The ornament was melted and molded into shapes of big bangles that could be fitted into the higher end of the arm. It was exclusively given to men. Some men wore a number of Izingxotha, depending on how often they had performed exceptional services to the nation. The purpose of Ingxotha was to acknowledge heroic deeds done, to encourage other subjects and to continually convey the significance of service to fellow human beings as well as to nature.
The enhancement of Ingxotha
There will be many people in my nation who will initially open their eyes wide when they learn that an Ingxotha award has been bestowed upon Annabelle Bond, OBE, since she is obviously not male.
However, I believe they will suddenly realize the type of contribution Annabelle Bond has once more made to the enhancement of the Ingxotha award which was historically bestowed on men, without an oath that it would never be given to women. History so far simply had it that only men received it, but no one ever said no woman should be awarded. It just had not occurred to the kings of the time. Her contribution today is that the magnanimity of work, and the interest that the leadership of Thanda and the Thanda Foundation has in the Zulu Nation, has given birth to this unique idea being resurrected. The previous recipients of the award include King Shaka, Gala kaNodade, Magolwane Jiyane, Dambuza, King Dingane’ advisor, Nzobo Ntombela, ONdlela kaSompisi, Nozishada kaMaqhoboza.
Henceforth principles on which Ingxotha will be awarded
Today many nations fight wars of a different type. We no longer resort to guns, spears or bombs in order to settle disputes or to maintain kingdoms. We no longer give in to disease and tyrannies, and social ills like poverty and crime. We make other means to combat these assaults on life. The award of Ingxotha will therefore, from now onwards, be considered for any type of contribution and by any person in society or world, if some of the following activities are met:
people must be highly successful in their field which adds to the quality of life of the people of the world
the person’s contribution and dedication to the improvement of human living should be sufficiently visible and capable of invoking similar motives in others
actively sets out to make a difference in the world, fights or advocates for human rights, poverty eradication and the arrest of the spread of HIV/Aids
using their success, ability and even own funds, to highlight and pursue worthy international causes
people of international good standing who inspire and motivate youth to go for their dreams
entrepreneurs and philanthropists who have displayed extraordinary achievements and contributions
unrelentingly supporting community based programmes that promote health, education and the welfare of children and
people whose lives are demonstrably based on integrity, honesty, discipline, responsibility and fun
The Inauguration
Annabelle Bond (OBE), on behalf of the Zulu Nation, it is now my singular pleasure to declare you the FIRST HONORARY PRINCESS ROYAL COUNCIL OF INGXOTHA. Long live your endeavours and dreams of a better world.
His Majesty the King has chosen to give her the name fitting for her most inspiring contribution she has made around the world. He has given her the name NOMOYA (which means the wind). The reason the King gave her this name is because he was so inspired by the hard work she has done and all the challenges she has to endure during her adventures. This means she can be felt from all directions of the world. This means that she is representing the whole world, North, South, East and West.
