VULA ZULU

Ignite your imagination and open your mind to the hypnotic drumming that sets the rhythm of authenticity.

Inspired by the hues of nature, Thanda embraces the charisma and power of Zulu culture, incorporating its elements throughout the lodge. An ancient culture of tradition and integrity, many Zulus living in rural KwaZulu-Natal have retained their traditional lifestyles despite Western intervention and the exacerbating pressures of globalisation. The lodge has been built to resemble a Zulu kraal which traditionally, is built in a circular structure. The circle is the most prominent shape in Zulu design and is indicative of the connections that all bodies have in life. The Zulus believed very strongly in the connection between themselves and the spiritual realm, and the physical state of a body was an indication of the favourable or disfavourable light the gods viewed that person in.

UMPHAFA / THE BUFFALO THORN

Experience the impassioned energy of performative culture at its very best as the fires of the past resurrect the innate rhythms that consummate the Zulu Kingdom. Vula Zulu is a celebration of Zulu culture at its most colourful; a revival of the ancient art of storytelling through the pulsations of the human body.

Established as a 'living museum', Vula Zulu discloses the sacred rites of passage and age-old traditions that define the descendants of King Shaka through one of Africa’s oldest forms of theatre: dance. Guests are invited to taste traditional beer, be made privy to the intricacies of basket-weaving and observe the art of spear combat as the cry of the impi reverberates through the village. The traditions of the performers are preserved as they do not reside at the homestead but return to their homes in the tribal land after each public performance. Hand-crafted items are displayed in the on-site curio shop and guests can wander through the market at their leisure before enjoying a meal at the restaurant.
